Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye, Sjögren's Syndrome
This syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by dry eyes and mouth. The immune system of people suffering from Sjögren’s Syndrome attacks the glands that keep these lubricated, but it also affects the whole body. About 4 million Americans have Sjögren’s Syndrome, and it’s more common in women. Symptoms include gritty or burning sensation in the eyes, dry mouth, lips, throat and eyes, difficulty talking, chewing or swallowing and joint pain.
Treatment is symptomatic; dry eye caused by Sjögren’s Syndrome is often treated with warm compresses, artificial tears, punctual plugs, cyclosporine or corticosteroids.

Moderate to Severe Evaporative Dry Eye (MGD)
Meibomian glands are small oil glands located in the margin of the eyelids. These secrete meibum, an oily substance that prevents the natural tears from evaporating.
When the Meibomian glands are clogged, the tear evaporation rate increases. Watery eyes, burning and stingy eyes, irritation and scratchiness and overall ocular discomfort are among the symptoms of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. The risk of suffering MGD increases with age, but other factors such as not removing eye makeup completely, contribute to it.
Treatment consists of warm compresses, lid massage, eyelash scrubs, increased intake of omega-3, antibacterial eye drops, cyclosporine drops, or implementation of punctual plugs.

Moderate to Severe Blepharitis
Blepharitis is a common ocular surface disease that causes inflammation of the eyelids; it’s usually associated to dry eye. Anterior blepharitis is caused by bacteria, whereas posterior blepharitis is a result of Meibomian gland dysfunction or other conditions such as those related to the presence of Demodex mites. Sometimes, allergic reactions to medications or cosmetics can cause blepharitis too.
Symptoms include redness, burning sensation, irritation, tearing, eyelid/eyelash crusting, and visual problems such as light sensitivity and blurred vision; symptoms are typically worse in the mornings.
The first line of treatment is eyelid hygiene and warm compresses. Further treatment requires antibiotics, steroids and artificial tears.

Lid Margin Inflammation
Lid margin inflammation is manifested as a swollen upper or lower eyelid, due to excess fluid in the tissues around the eye. Irritation, watery, red and itchy eyes are among the symptoms.
Causes vary, but the most common are allergies, eye infections, trauma (like a black eye), blepharitis and Grave’s disease. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, but cool compresses always help to reduce the swelling.

Glaucoma / Skin Discoloration
Glaucoma is an ocular disease in which the optic nerve is damaged. About 3 million Americans have it, and it’s the leading cause of blindness around the world. Early diagnosis and treatment are keys to prevent vision loss.
Glaucoma patients are treated with surgery and/or combination of eye drops to reduce eye pressure. Unfortunately, side effects of prostaglandin analogs eye drops include skin and iris discoloration.

Fine Lines
Fine lines are one of the most common signs of aging that appear when skin cells start to lose collagen. Getting enough sleep and keeping the area well hydrated can slow down the appearance of fine lines. When looking for anti-aging products, make sure they are safe to apply around the eyes. Those with ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and hydroxy acids will help neutralize antioxidants that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles.

Eyelid Hydration
Dry eyelids are often related to skin conditions such as psoriasis, or eye conditions such as blepharitis. This dryness and swelling can also be caused by shampoo, cosmetics, cleansers or food. Keeping a good eyelid hygiene and applying eye moisturizers can help hydrate the eyelids. Our recommendation is to look for eye creams specially designed to apply safely on the eyelids and formulated with naturally hydrating ingredients such as aloe.
