What is Demodex?

Demodex mites are tiny parasites that live in the Meibomian glands of the eyelids and the sebaceous glands of the skin, meaning they are not only found on eyelashes but also other face areas. Demodex can cause uncomfortable symptoms including eye irritation, eyelid inflammation, itching and loss of eyelashes. Eyelid hygiene is crucial for management of Demodex-caused conditions such as blepharitis. Numerous scientific studies have reported the inefficacy of known methods such as the use of baby shampoo in the treatment of conditions related to Demodex. Tea tree oil has been proven to be one of the only known products to inhibit Demodex growth.

  • Moderate to Severe Evaporative Dry Eye (MGD)

Meibomian glands are small oil glands located in the margin of the eyelids. These secrete meibum, an oily substance that prevents the natural tears from evaporating.

When the Meibomian glands are clogged, the tear evaporation rate increases. Watery eyes, burning and stingy eyes, irritation and scratchiness and overall ocular discomfort are among the symptoms of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. The risk of suffering MGD increases with age, but other factors such as not removing eye makeup completely, contribute to it.

Treatment consists of warm compresses, lid massage, eyelash scrubs, increased intake of omega-3, antibacterial eye drops, cyclosporine drops, or implementation of punctual plugs.

    Moderate to Severe Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a common ocular surface disease that causes inflammation of the eyelids; it’s usually associated to dry eye. Anterior blepharitis is caused by bacteria, whereas posterior blepharitis is a result of Meibomian gland dysfunction or other conditions such as those related to the presence of Demodex mites. Sometimes, allergic reactions to medications or cosmetics can cause blepharitis too.

Symptoms include redness, burning sensation, irritation, tearing, eyelid/eyelash crusting, and visual problems such as light sensitivity and blurred vision; symptoms are typically worse in the mornings.

The first line of treatment is eyelid hygiene and warm compresses. Further treatment requires antibiotics, steroids and artificial tears.

    Styes/Chalazion

Chalazia and styes are lumps in the edge of the eyelids. These are caused by an infected eyelash follicle or when a Meibomian gland gets clogged with oil. Chalazia usually appear further from the edge of the eyelid. Blepharitis patients can suffer from recurrent styes. These red bumps cause tearing, blurred vision.

Styes and chalazia are often treated with warm compresses and avoiding any contact such as rubbing your eyes.  Antibiotics or surgical removal might be needed in more severe cases.

    Demodex Infestation

Demodex mites are tiny parasites that live in the Meibomian glands of the eyelids and the sebaceous glands of the skin, meaning they are not only found on eyelashes but also other face areas. Almost every adult carries a small amount of Demodex, however, when these increase in number they cause uncomfortable symptoms including eye irritation, eyelid inflammation, itching and loss of eyelashes. Demodex mites are also linked to other skin conditions such as rosacea.

Eyelid hygiene is crucial in Demodex-caused conditions management. Tea tree oil has been scientifically proven to eradicate the mites.

GREAT
My doctor keeps prescribing expensive medications for my eye condition, however, after researching the problem over the computer, I've come to the conclusion this is the product I need to help. Sure enough, soon after using this eye scrub, my issues started clearing up. It was almost immediately. Not only that, they call you soon after you receive the product to see if you have any questions or issues. Only someone that knows their product will work would o this. I'm placing my second order now ... Read More

The Best Eyelid Treatment
Because I have problems with mites in my eyes, I have been trying various products. Yours was satisfactory, but it seemed to dry out my the skin on my eyelids. (At that time I had eliminated all moisturizers from my face also.) I didn't really notice a huge improvement until I started using it over my whole face. As you can probably guess, I also have rosacea. After using it for a week, my cheeks were no longer as red and I no longer needed to use eye wipes on my eyelids as much. I don't k... Read More
